Tinctures are plant extracts prepared with alcohol instead of water. They are very concentrated. To prepare a tincture at home, use vodka 43% alcohol.
The general recipe for making a tincture is to add one ounce of fresh or dried, chopped herb to five ounces of distilled alcohol, and leave it for six weeks.
Tips for Making a Tincture
- Seal container hermetically
- Do not prepare tincture on expensive furniture
- Mark the tincture with the name of the herb used and the date it was left to stand.
- Shake the mixture every two or three days to aid absorption
- Do not expose tincture to direct sunlight
- The use of a dark, glass container is recommended
- Add more distilled alcohol if you notice the amount of the liquid has lowered
- Store in a fresh place
- Doses for tinctures vary depending on the herb used
- Keep out of the reach of children
You may also prepare tinctures using apple cider vinegar instead of alcohol. The instructions are the same.
How to Make a Tincture for Hair Loss
Add a quarter cup of dry sage in a clean glass jar. Then add a quarter cup of stinging nettle. Then, add two cups of vodka. If you do not have vodka you can also use rum or brandy. Or if you want an non alcoholic tincture you can use vinegar. But if you add vodka or rum, make sure it is unflavored.
Cover with a tight lid and shake for 30 seconds. Keep in a cool dark place for four weeks. Shake it for about 30 seconds every day.
After four weeks strain, and put the tincture in a clean jar. Close tightly and keep in a dark, cool place. Apply it to the hair roots using an eye dropper, and massage hair for a few minutes. Repeat every day. You can keep these tincture for up to two years.
