Home Remedies for Sciatic Nerve Pain

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body. When this nerve becomes inflamed either by compression or irritation, the affected person feels a lot of pain starting from the waist down the thigh of the leg and reaching beyond the knee.
Sciatica pain can be debilitating and often leads to partial or complete immobility.
There is no single treatment for sciatica. Conventional treatment involves the use of toxic analgesics. Even doctors suggest a combination of therapies.

Herbs are an important part of alternative remedies for sciatica. Other therapies include exercise, acupuncture, yoga and chiropractic manipulation.
Following are some home remedies to relieve the pain of sciatica.
sciatic painPotatoes and celery juice – It is believed that the juices of potato and celery can be very helpful in relieving the pain of sciatica. The only small drawback to this remedy is that many people do not have a juice extractor. But perhaps a relative or friend can lend you one. The recipe is to juice enough potatoes and celery to make 10 oz. of potato and celery juice. Take the 10 ounces a day.
Celery Tea – This recipe is easier because you do not need a juice extractor. Wash a few sticks of celery with leaves and everything and place into a pot with boiling water. Leave to simmer until the water turns green. Take two cups of celery tea a day.
Milk and garlic – Crush two cloves of garlic and mix with 1/2 cup milk. Take the mixture without chewing the bits of garlic, morning and night. You will see results in about two weeks.

Quercetin and Bromelin

Quercetin and bromelin are two natural supplements that may help to relieve sciatica. Quercetin is a bioflavonoid found in fruits and vegetables such as onions and red apples. Quercetin is rich in antioxidants that stop the damage caused to the cells by free radicals. In combination with bromelin (an enzyme found in pineapple), quercetin can block the inflammation process that causes the pain of sciatica.
Turmeric for Sciatic Pain
Turmeric is an herb that grows as a slender stalk yellowish orange inside. It contains well-known anti-inflammatory properties and is an effective herb to heal wounds.
A mixture of turmeric, butter and herbs such as garlic is used as a topical medication for healing, relieving pain and reducing inflammation.
You can find turmeric in supplement form in almost any store that sells vitamins.
